Need each label to carry its own running number - asset tags, serial numbers, raffle stubs or consecutive inventory IDs? LabelCraft prints sequential numbers automatically. You set the rule once and every label in the job counts up on its own, no spreadsheet gymnastics required.

What a serial element is

A serial is a label element that renders a per-label incrementing number as text. Its value is a pure function of the element settings and the label's position in the job: prefix + number + suffix, with the number zero-padded to a fixed width. Drop a serial element onto your layout with no configuration at all and the labels simply read 1, 2, 3 and so on. Configure it, and the same engine produces exactly the format you want.

Set it up

  1. Add a serial element to your label and position it like any other text field.
  2. Set the prefix (and optional suffix). For asset tags, ASSET- is a common choice; leave it blank for a bare number.
  3. Set start (default 1) and padWidth (default 0 = no padding). With prefix ASSET-, start 1 and padWidth 4, the first three labels print ASSET-0001, ASSET-0002 and ASSET-0003.
  4. Set step (default 1) if you want a different increment - a larger step to skip numbers, a negative step to count down, or 0 to repeat the same number on every label.

One honest limit: numbering is per job

LabelCraft is stateless per print job: the count restarts at your start value every time you print. There is no persisted cross-job counter yet, so if you printed ASSET-0001 through ASSET-0050 today and want the next batch to continue, set the start value to 51 before you print. Plan your batches and write down where you left off, and the numbering stays clean across runs.

How LabelCraft keeps it never-silent

A serial draws through the normal text branch, so it inherits the never-silent overflow guarantee. If a number grows too long for its box - a wide prefix plus a big pad width on a small label - LabelCraft warns you instead of quietly trimming a digit. A truncated asset number is a wrong asset number, so the engine refuses to fail silently. Give the field room or shrink the text, and you ship labels you can trust.
