203 vs 300 DPI for Shopify Barcode Labels

Thermal label printers print on a fixed grid of dots. A barcode scans reliably only when its narrow bars are a consistent, whole number of those dots wide - so the printer's resolution, measured in dots per inch (DPI), quietly decides whether your codes read the first time. This guide explains what 203 and 300 dpi actually mean, why barcodes care, and how to pick the right one.
What DPI actually means
DPI is how many dots the printer lays down per inch. A 203 dpi printer prints about 8 dots per millimetre; a 300 dpi printer about 12. More dots means finer detail - but the number on its own is not what makes a barcode scan. What matters is how a bar's width divides into whole dots.
Why barcodes care about whole dots
Every linear barcode is built from a smallest unit - the narrow bar or module (its X-dimension). For a scanner to read it, that module needs to be at least 2 whole printer dots wide; 3 dots is comfortable. If a module works out to a fractional number of dots - say 2.4 - the printer has to round every bar and space to a whole dot, so the bar/space ratio drifts across the symbol. That drift is the classic, invisible cause of a barcode that looks fine on screen but scans poorly on the label.
203 vs 300 dpi: which should you use?
Neither resolution is simply "better". The rule is to match your template to your printer: design at 300 dpi for a 300 dpi printer, at 203 dpi for a 203 dpi one. Where 300 dpi genuinely helps is small or dense barcodes - more dots per module means more room to keep that module at or above the 2-dot floor on a tiny label. On a roomy label a 203 dpi printer reads perfectly well. Most desktop thermals are 203 dpi; Dymo LabelWriter and Brother QL models are 300 dpi - the printer compatibility list shows the native DPI of each model.
