Shopify POS rings up a sale by scanning the barcode on a product. If the label on your shelf or product carries no scannable barcode, your staff fall back to searching by name at the register, which is slow and easy to get wrong at a busy till. This guide shows how to print barcode labels with LabelCraft that scan first time at your Shopify POS register.

How Shopify POS reads a barcode

When a cashier scans an item, Shopify POS looks up the variant whose barcode field matches the scanned value and adds it to the cart at the right price. The scanner does not read the SKU or the product title - it reads the value encoded in the bars. So the one thing every product you sell in person needs is a real, scannable value in its Shopify barcode field, printed as a clean symbol on the label.

Every product needs a scannable barcode value

A SKU is your own internal code and is not, by itself, scannable. To scan at POS you need a barcode value: a retail GTIN such as EAN-13 or UPC-A, or a self-assigned Code 128 for products you only sell in your own shop. You do not have to buy GTINs for in-store labels. If a variant has no barcode yet, Generate missing barcodes assigns one in a single pass: a real GTIN-13 when you have entered a GS1 prefix, otherwise a unique Code 128. Print labels that actually scan at the till

Which label size for Shopify POS?

Most in-store barcode labels are a small roll or die-cut sticker for the product or the shelf edge. A single-column or 2-up roll on a thermal printer is the usual choice; an Avery sheet works if you print in batches on a laser printer.
