Your products carry more than a title and a price. Apparel has material and care instructions, food has ingredients, regulated goods carry a country of origin - and in Shopify all of that usually lives in metafields. LabelCraft can print any of it on a label with a metafield element, and it does so free on every plan.

The short answer

Add a metafield element to your template, type the metafield's reference as namespace.key, and its value prints on the label. There is no Pro gate on metafields - the element is free on every plan. If a value is missing or a type cannot print, LabelCraft tells you instead of printing a blank.

How to reference a metafield

A metafield is addressed by its namespace and key, written with a dot between them. LabelCraft splits on the first dot only - the namespace never contains a dot, but a key can - so custom.material resolves to namespace custom and key material, and custom.dimensions.width keeps dimensions.width as the key. A value with no dot (just ingredients) cannot address a real metafield, so it is rejected with a clear message rather than left blank.

Which metafield types can print as text

LabelCraft prints the metafield types that have a plain text form: text, number, date, measurement (the value keeps its unit), money, rating, and boolean. These cover the overwhelming majority of the custom data merchants put on labels.

Types that cannot print as text

Some metafield types have no plain-text form and cannot go on a label: a reference to another object (which is really an internal id), raw JSON, and rich text. LabelCraft does not silently drop these - it warns you which element cannot print so you can switch it to a printable type or remove it. Nothing disappears without a word.

How LabelCraft stays never-silent

Across the print flow, an unresolved metafield is surfaced, never guessed: an invalid reference (no namespace.key) is flagged; a value missing on some of the printed products is reported with a count; an unprintable type names the element; and a load failure tells you to try again. A blank on a label is always something you were told about first.

Steps to print a metafield

Open the template designer and add a metafield element where you want the value.
Enter the reference as namespace.key - for a standard custom field that is usually custom.something.
Preview with a real product. If the value is missing or the type cannot print, the pre-flight check names it before you spend a roll.
Print. The custom field prints as text at the size you picked, to ±0.1 mm.

Frequently asked

Is printing metafields a Pro feature?

No. The metafield element is free on every plan. It prints exactly like any other text element - there is no upsell to put your custom fields on a label.

My metafield element prints nothing - why?

Either the reference does not resolve (check it is written namespace.key with a dot), the value is empty on that product, or the type is one that cannot print as text (a reference, JSON, or rich text). LabelCraft surfaces which of these it is rather than printing a silent blank.

Can I print a measurement metafield with its unit?

Yes. A measurement type prints its value together with its unit, so a weight or dimension reads correctly on the label. Money, number, date, rating and boolean types print as text too.
