You authored a clean template, but the printed product name comes out fuzzy, cramped, or smeared into a grey smudge you can barely read. Almost always the cause is not your printer or your label stock - it is the font size. Thermal printers have a hard physical limit on how fine a stroke they can lay down, and text below that limit prints as an unreadable blur no matter how good the hardware is.

Why text smears below 6 pt

A standard desktop thermal printer prints at 203 dpi - roughly one printer dot every 0.125 mm. Letter shapes are built from strokes, and at very small sizes those strokes become thinner than a single dot. The printer cannot render half a dot: it either drops the stroke or fattens it, so neighbouring letters bleed together and counters (the holes in letters like e and a) fill in solid. The result is the smeared, muddy text you are seeing. Below about 6 pt, this happens to almost every font.

LabelCraft's 6 pt floor

LabelCraft sets a readable floor of 6 pt for thermal text. Any text element you author below that size is caught by a never-silent guard before you print: it names the element and its size and tells you to raise it. So a product name accidentally left at 5 pt cannot quietly ship as a blur - you get a clear warning naming that element, not a surprise on the printed sheet. The guard never lets a sub-floor font through in silence.

It checks the authored size

The check runs on the size you typed into the template, before LabelCraft applies its per-printer scale correction. That matters: a calibrated shop may intentionally shrink the in-PDF font so the printer's own enlargement lands the physical print back at the right size, and flagging that corrected number would cry wolf on every calibrated shop. By assessing the authored size instead, the guard is a per-template design check - content-independent, and accurate whether your shop is calibrated or not.

Fix it: room, not a smaller font

When a long name will not fit at 6 pt, the wrong move is to shrink the font under the floor. LabelCraft's autofit shrinks only down to the 6 pt floor and then warns rather than going smaller, so the fix is to give the text room:

Enlarge the text box or move other elements aside so the name has space to sit at 6 pt or larger.
Shorten the text - trim the product name, drop a redundant word, or use an abbreviation that still reads at a glance.
Use a bigger label if the content genuinely needs more room than the stock allows; a larger format buys you readable text without dropping below the floor.
