Colored or low-contrast barcode will not scan
LabelCraft - barcode labels for Shopify that print at exactly the size you set.
Every label prints at the size you set - measured, not approximate.
Overflow or a missing barcode always raises a visible warning before you print.
Modules snap to your printer's dots, so codes stay crisp and scan first time.
We never overwrite or reassign a product's existing barcode.
A scanner does not see shapes - it measures the difference in reflected light between the dark bars and the light gaps around them. That difference is what carries the data. Print the bars in red, gold, a metallic foil, or any pale ink, and they bounce too much of the scanner's beam back: the reader can no longer tell a bar from a gap, and the code simply will not decode. Colour, not size, is the quiet killer here - a perfectly sized barcode in the wrong ink is as dead as one printed too small.
Dark bars on a light background
Contrast is measured as a ratio. The WCAG contrast ratio between any two colours runs from 1:1 - two identical colours, completely invisible - up to 21:1, which is pure black on pure white. That ceiling of 21:1 is the most contrast two colours can ever have, and it is exactly what a barcode scanner is tuned for: deep black bars against a clean white background. Every step you take away from that, toward a tinted bar or a coloured stock, narrows the margin the scanner has to work with. Black on white is not a stylistic default - it is the physics of getting a reliable read.
Why a LabelCraft barcode is always black
LabelCraft removes this failure mode entirely: it renders every barcode in pure black on the label background and never tints it, so the symbol is always drawn at the maximum 21:1 contrast. Pick any brand colour you like for the rest of the label - you cannot accidentally make a LabelCraft barcode unscannable by colouring it, because the bars are not yours to colour. This is a deliberate guarantee, not a setting you might forget to turn on. The barcode that leaves the app is the one a scanner is built to read.
Your coloured text is guarded too (the 3:1 floor)
Brand colour is allowed where it is safe: the text and price elements. There, LabelCraft enforces a legibility floor. Any element whose colour against its background falls below a 3:1 contrast ratio is flagged before you print - 3:1 being the WCAG floor for large and graphical text. That stops the classic disaster of white text on a pale-yellow chip printing blank, or a low-contrast price coming out invisible. So a coloured price can never silently print as nothing: you are warned on screen while it is still free to fix, not after a run of stock is already on the shelf.
If a barcode already will not scan
If a code printed from another tool refuses to scan because of its colour, the fix is always the same three moves:
- Dark bars, light background. Re-print the symbol in pure black on white or near-white stock. No red, no gold, no foil, no pale grey - those reflect the beam and defeat the read every time.
- Print at actual size, with no scaling. A shrunk or stretched code loses the module widths it was built with; see print at actual size.
- Re-generate it in LabelCraft. Drop the value into the app and the barcode comes out black, at
21:1, checked against the minimum scannable size for your label - so colour and dimensions are both correct from the start.
