Shopify Barcode Labels — Complete Guide
LabelCraft - barcode labels for Shopify that print at exactly the size you set.
Every label prints at the size you set - measured, not approximate.
Overflow or a missing barcode always raises a visible warning before you print.
Modules snap to your printer's dots, so codes stay crisp and scan first time.
We never overwrite or reassign a product's existing barcode.
Printing barcode labels for your Shopify products should be straightforward: select what you want to label, pick the label size, and print. In practice, the details — printer compatibility, exact label dimensions, print scale, missing barcodes — catch merchants off guard. This page collects everything in one place.

How Shopify barcode labels work
Shopify stores barcodes in each product variant's Barcode field. A label app reads those values from the Shopify Admin API and lays them out on a PDF sized to your label stock. You print the PDF on any label printer. That is the whole flow.
Two things go wrong most often:
- Missing barcodes — if a variant has no barcode in Shopify, the label is blank. LabelCraft can generate EAN-13 / GTIN-13 barcodes using your own GS1 company prefix, or internal Code 128 identifiers when GS1 isn't required. A dry-run preview shows exactly which variants will be updated before anything is written to Shopify.
- Wrong print scale — browser print dialogs default to “Fit to page”, which shrinks the PDF and makes barcodes unscannable. Always set scale to exactly 100% (shown as “Actual size” or “None” in some dialogs).
Choosing the right label size
Label size depends on what information you need to fit and the physical constraints of your products:
- Small items — jewellery, accessories — 17–30 mm wide. Barcode + SKU only. Use Code 128 or EAN-8 if space is very tight.
- Standard retail products — 50–62 mm wide. Room for an EAN-13, product name, price, and SKU. Dymo 30334, Zebra 57 × 32 mm, and Brother DK-11212 are all in this range.
- Warehouse and large items — 100–104 mm wide. Full barcode, title, variant description. Zebra 4" × 2" or Brother DK-11202 are common choices.
- Sheet labels (Avery) — for batch printing on an office laser or inkjet. Avery 5160 (30 per sheet, 63.5 × 25.4 mm per label) is the most widely used. LabelCraft supports a start-position field to resume a partially used sheet without wasting labels.
Barcode formats
LabelCraft renders the correct barcode type based on your product data:
- EAN-13 / GTIN-13 — 13-digit barcode for retail products sold internationally. Required by most large retailers and retail chains.
- UPC-A — 12-digit North-American equivalent. Auto-detected from the product record.
- EAN-8 — Short form for very small labels where a full EAN-13 won't fit.
- Code 128 — Alphanumeric, variable length. Used for internal SKUs or any identifier that isn't a GS1 number. Always scannable; cannot be decoded as an external product number.
Not sure your barcodes are valid, globally-unique GTINs? See the GS1 barcodes & valid GTINs guide for how the check digit works and why Google Shopping rejects invalid or restricted codes.
Custom templates
If your label stock isn't on the built-in preset list, go to Templates → New template and enter the exact width and height in millimeters. From there you can:
- Add elements: barcode, product title, price, SKU, or custom static text.
- Set per-element overflow mode (shrink auto-reduces the font to fit; truncate shortens it with an ellipsis) so long product names never silently overflow.
- Apply X/Y calibration offsets in mm to correct any systematic drift between your template and where ink lands on your specific printer and label stock.
- Download a calibration test page (outline + crosshair + 1 mm rulers per cell) and a test PDF to verify the layout before printing a full batch.
LabelCraft vs Shopify's built-in label app
Shopify ships a free built-in tool called Retail Barcode Labels. It works for simple cases. If you manage many variants, need exact dimensions for a printer that isn't on its list, or need to generate missing barcodes, the differences matter. See the full breakdown:
Saved presets for recurring print jobs
If you run the same print job regularly — Monday restock, weekly receiving, end-of-season repricing — LabelCraft's saved presets let you save a product selection and quantity set and replay it in one click. Product data (price, barcode, stock) is always fetched fresh from Shopify at replay time, so you never print stale prices. Presets are a Pro feature.
