The guarantees behind every label

Every label prints at the size you set - measured, not approximate.

Never a silent failure

Overflow or a missing barcode always raises a visible warning before you print.

Whole-dot barcodes

Modules snap to your printer's dots, so codes stay crisp and scan first time.

Your barcodes, untouched

We never overwrite or reassign a product's existing barcode.

Shopify ships a built-in barcode label app called Retail Barcode Labels. It handles the basics, but a large share of its public reviews describe specific, repeatable problems. LabelCraft was built to fix those problems. This page lays out the key differences so you can decide which tool fits your workflow.

Five things merchants compare

1. Default quantity per variant

Retail Barcode Labels defaults every variant to 1 label. With hundreds of variants, you must zero out everything you don't need before printing — the #1 pain point in its 1-star reviews.

LabelCraft defaults every variant to 0. You fill in only what you want to print. Bulk-set from live inventory, or save a named selection as a preset and replay it in one click.

2. Label dimensions and printer support

Retail Barcode Labels offers a fixed set of pre-configured templates. If your label stock isn't on the list, you're stuck. Sheet templates are limited; roll formats can be missing entirely.

LabelCraft ships 12 + built-in presets covering the most common Dymo, Zebra, Brother, and Avery stocks, and lets you create fully custom templates in millimeters. PDFs render to the exact physical size of your label stock (±0.1 mm), so the print-at-100% workflow works reliably on any printer.

3. Barcode generation

Retail Barcode Labels prints existing barcodes from your product records but does not generate new ones.

LabelCraft can generate missing EAN-13 / GTIN-13 barcodes using your own GS1 company prefix, or internal Code 128 identifiers when GS1 isn't required. A dry-run preview shows exactly which variants will be updated before anything is written to Shopify.

4. Live preview before printing

Retail Barcode Labels shows a static template thumbnail. The preview is not generated by the same engine that produces the PDF, so what you see may not match what prints.

LabelCraft renders a live PNG preview using the exact same engine that generates the PDF — same dimensions, same barcode positions, same text wrapping. You can see overflow warnings and the start-position gap before a single label is printed.

5. Silent rendering failures

Retail Barcode Labels has documented cases where text overflows without warning, barcodes silently disappear, or labels count against quotas even when the render is broken.

LabelCraft raises an explicit warning for every overflow and missing barcode. Failed or preview renders never consume quota. The engine is designed to fail loudly or not at all.
