How to Print Zebra Labels from Shopify
LabelCraft - barcode labels for Shopify that print at exactly the size you set.
Every label prints at the size you set - measured, not approximate.
Overflow or a missing barcode always raises a visible warning before you print.
Modules snap to your printer's dots, so codes stay crisp and scan first time.
We never overwrite or reassign a product's existing barcode.
Zebra printers are a go-to in retail and warehousing for their reliability and wide label-stock compatibility. This guide explains how to print barcode labels for your Shopify products on a Zebra - either as a PDF through the printer driver (the path any label app uses) or as native ZPL exported straight from LabelCraft.
Supported Zebra models
Zebra printers that install a Windows or macOS printer driver (rather than network-only ZPL printing) work directly with LabelCraft. Tested and commonly deployed models include:
- ZD410 / ZD420 / ZD421 — compact desktop direct-thermal. The ZD410 prints up to 2" (50.8 mm) wide; ZD420 / ZD421 up to 4" (101.6 mm). The most common Zebra desktop series.
- ZD620 — mid-range direct-thermal desktop, up to 4" wide.
- GK420d / GX420d — older but still widely deployed 4" desktop models. Full driver support on Windows and macOS.
- ZT230 / ZT410 — industrial mid-range (4"). Common in warehouse and fulfilment environments.
- ZT510 / ZT610 / ZT620 — high-speed industrial, up to 4" or 6" wide.
Industrial Zebra printers mounted in network-only ZPL mode (raw ZPL over TCP/IP, no printer driver) are covered too: LabelCraft exports native ZPL you download or push through PrintNode (see the ZPL export guide). For the PDF path, the Zebra needs a driver so it appears in your computer's system printer list.
Common Zebra label sizes (in millimeters)
Zebra label stock is usually specified in inches; millimeter equivalents below are exact:
- 50.8 × 25.4 mm (2" × 1") — Common compact format for 2" printers (ZD410). Pick-and-pack and small retail.
- 57 × 32 mm (2.25" × 1.25") — Small multi-purpose. Jewellery, accessories, and small retail. One barcode and short product name.
- 57 × 25 mm (2.25" × 1") — Extra-small. Barcode + SKU only; too narrow for a price at readable sizes.
- 101.6 × 50.8 mm (4" × 2") — Standard product label for 4" printers. Room for barcode, title, price, and SKU.
- 101.6 × 25.4 mm (4" × 1") — Slot or shelf label; title + barcode only.
- 101.6 × 152.4 mm (4" × 6") — Full shipping label. Overkill for product barcodes but works for large-item labelling.
LabelCraft includes built-in presets for the most common sizes above and lets you enter any custom width and height in millimeters for anything else.
ZPL vs PDF printing
Zebra printers support two printing paths: ZPL (Zebra Programming Language, the printer's native command language) and PDF via the printer driver. LabelCraft supports both: it generates native ZPL you can download or send through PrintNode, and a PDF that prints on any Zebra with a driver installed. Use ZPL for the crispest, driverless output; use PDF when a template needs an element ZPL doesn't carry yet (logos, colours, or GS1-128 / Data Matrix barcodes).
The critical print setting: 100% scale
The single most common reason Zebra labels print at the wrong size or barcodes won't scan is the print dialog scaling the PDF.
When your browser's print dialog opens, set scale to 100% — sometimes labelled “Actual size” or “None”. Do not use “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit”, or “Auto” — these shrink barcode modules below scanner threshold and shift the ink off the label edges.
LabelCraft embeds the exact physical size of your label stock in every PDF (±0.1 mm). At 100% scale the label lands exactly where it should.
Step-by-step: printing Zebra labels from Shopify with LabelCraft
- Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin sidebar (Apps → LabelCraft).
- In Step 1 — Select Products, search for the products you want to label and add them.
- In Step 2 — Set Quantities, enter how many labels per variant, or use “From inventory” to pull live stock counts.
- In Step 3 — Print, choose your Zebra template from the dropdown (e.g. Zebra 57 × 32 mm). A live preview renders instantly.
- Click Generate PDF to download a PDF sized exactly to your label stock.
- Open the PDF, set Print → Scale: 100% / Actual size, select your Zebra printer, and print.
Custom Zebra label sizes
If your roll isn't in the preset list, go to Templates → New template and type the exact width and height in millimeters. Add elements (barcode, title, price, SKU), position them, and download a test PDF before committing to a full batch.
The calibration offset fields (X/Y shift in mm) let you correct any systematic drift between the PDF and where ink lands on your stock. Print a calibration test page, measure the offset once, and every future job adjusts automatically.
Troubleshooting
Barcode doesn't scan
Almost always a scale issue — print at 100%, not “fit to page”. If the barcode is completely missing from a product record, use LabelCraft's “Generate missing barcodes” feature to create a valid EAN-13 or internal Code 128 barcode.
Label is slightly off-centre on the stock
Use the calibration offset fields (X/Y in mm) in the template editor. Print a calibration test page, measure the drift, type the offset in, and re-print.
Text is cut off
LabelCraft shows an overflow warning before the PDF is generated. Set the overflow mode for that element to shrink (auto-reduces font until it fits) or truncate (shortens it with an ellipsis).
Printer not listed in my browser print dialog
For the PDF path the Zebra must have a printer driver installed on the workstation running the browser - network-only ZPL mode will not appear as a PDF printer. Install Zebra Setup Utilities (zebradesigner.com) for your model so it appears in your OS printer list, or skip the driver entirely and export native ZPL instead.
