LabelCraft can hand your Zebra printer native ZPL, not only a PDF. ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) is the command language Zebra printers speak directly, so the printer draws the barcodes and text itself at full resolution. This guide explains how to export ZPL for your Shopify products, which barcode types come out as native ZPL, and what still uses the PDF path.

What ZPL is, and why send it to a Zebra

A Zebra can print one of two ways. Through a printer driver it rasterises a PDF - the same path any label app uses. In ZPL mode it receives compact text commands and renders the label on the printer itself. Native ZPL is smaller to send, prints fast, and keeps barcodes razor-sharp because the printer generates the symbol rather than reproducing a pre-rendered image. If your Zebra is set up for ZPL, exporting native ZPL from LabelCraft is the crispest path.

How to get ZPL out of LabelCraft

Download ZPL (Zebra) - the Print screen, Print from a list, and Print collection all offer a Download ZPL button next to Generate PDF. It saves a .zpl file sized exactly to your label stock.
Send it through PrintNode - connect a PrintNode account in Settings and LabelCraft pushes the ZPL straight to your Zebra, with no file to handle.

Which barcodes print as native ZPL

LabelCraft emits a native Zebra barcode command so the printer draws the symbol itself:

EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A - the retail GTIN symbols. LabelCraft sends the data digits and the Zebra computes the check digit itself, so it always matches.
Code 128 - the workhorse for SKUs and internal codes.
QR codes - including the auto-link QR that encodes a product's storefront URL.

What still uses the PDF path (never silently)

A few elements are not in the ZPL output yet. LabelCraft never drops them in silence - it warns you before you print, and you generate a PDF for those templates:

GS1-128, Data Matrix, ITF-14 and Code 39 - these are not available in ZPL output yet. LabelCraft warns and skips them rather than printing the wrong symbol, so use the PDF output for a template that needs one of these.
Logos, background fills and colours - Zebra thermal printers are monochrome, so background colours are not applied and coloured or white text and lines print in solid black; logo images are skipped on the ZPL path. The PDF output renders all of them.

Exact sizing and never-silent warnings carry into ZPL

LabelCraft writes the print width and label length into the ZPL in printer dots, computed from your template's exact millimetre size and your printer's resolution (203 or 300 dpi). The same ±0.1 mm dimension guarantee that lands a PDF exactly on the stock applies to ZPL, and your calibration offset is written as a home-position shift - so a calibrated shop stays calibrated on both paths, with no print-dialog scaling step to get wrong.

Every never-silent check runs on the ZPL path exactly as it does on PDF. A barcode whose bars would fall below the scannable dot floor, text that would overflow its box, a missing or invalid barcode value, a payload too long for the symbol - each one warns you before you print. ZPL never quietly ships a broken label.

ZPL file download vs direct network printing

LabelCraft gives you ZPL two ways: a downloadable .zpl file and a direct push through PrintNode. What it does not do is open a raw TCP/IP connection to a printer's IP address. So a Zebra running in network-only ZPL mode (raw ZPL over the LAN, no driver and no PrintNode) cannot be driven straight from the app. To use one, connect it through PrintNode, or send the downloaded .zpl file to it yourself with Zebra Setup Utilities or your warehouse's print tooling.

Step by step: export ZPL from Shopify

Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin and pick the products to label, the same as any print job.
In Step 3 - Print, choose your Zebra template and check the live preview.
Click Download ZPL (Zebra) to save a .zpl file, or use Send to printer if you have connected PrintNode.
Send the .zpl to your Zebra - through PrintNode, Zebra Setup Utilities, or your own tooling. It prints at the exact size, with no scaling step.
