Rollo direct-thermal printers are a popular low-cost choice for small shops and warehouses — best known for 4×6 shipping labels, but just as capable of product and barcode labels. This guide covers how to print barcode labels for your Shopify products on a Rollo at the right size and the right scale, so barcodes scan and labels align.

Supported Rollo printers

Any Rollo that installs a standard printer driver on Windows or macOS works with LabelCraft — you print a normal PDF, so there is nothing Rollo-specific to configure in the app. Common models:

Rollo X1040 — the current 4-inch direct-thermal label printer (up to 150 mm/sec). Handles roll and fan-fold stock.
Rollo Wireless Printer (X1038) — Wi-Fi-connected 4-inch model. Print from a laptop, phone, or tablet on the same network.
Rollo USB Label Printer (the original “Classic”) — the widely-used first-generation USB model. Full driver support, still in service in thousands of shops.
Other Rollo desktop label printers — older and newer revisions of the 4-inch line install the same standard driver and print the same way.

Rollo printers are direct thermal — no ink or toner. They accept any thermal label up to 4 inches (about 104 mm) wide, on a roll or fan-folded, and a gap/black-mark sensor finds the start of each label automatically.

Because Rollo prints a standard PDF through the OS print dialog, the one setting that matters is the print scale — covered below. Everything else is the same as printing to any other label printer.

Common Rollo label sizes (in millimeters)

Rollo stock is sold by the inch; here are the most common sizes with their exact metric equivalents, so you can pick the matching LabelCraft template or create a custom one:

102 × 152 mm (4 × 6 in) — the standard shipping label. Oversized for a single product barcode, but handy for large-item or carton labels.
57 × 32 mm (2.25 × 1.25 in) — the classic retail barcode/price label. Enough room for a barcode plus a short title and price.
51 × 25 mm (2 × 1 in) — a compact product label. Best with Code 128 or a short EAN-13; keep text minimal.
76 × 51 mm (3 × 2 in) — a larger product label with room for barcode, name, price, and SKU.
102 × 51 mm (4 × 2 in) — a wide shelf or carton label. Good for a large barcode plus a long product name.
38 × 25 mm (1.5 × 1 in) — a small jewellery or unit label. Tight for barcodes — use Code 128 and check the scan-readiness warning.

The critical print setting: 100% scale

The most common cause of wrong-size labels and non-scanning barcodes on a Rollo is the print dialog scaling the PDF. When printing, set the scale to 100% — look for “Actual size” or “None” in the scale dropdown. Never use “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit”, or “Auto”, and make sure the selected paper size matches your label, not Letter or A4.

Step-by-step: printing Rollo labels from Shopify with LabelCraft

Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin (Apps → LabelCraft).
In Step 1 — Select Products, search for the products you want to label and add them.
In Step 2 — Set Quantities, enter quantities per variant, or use “From inventory” for live stock counts.
In Step 3 — Print, choose the template that matches your Rollo stock (e.g. 57 × 32 mm), or pick a custom one. A live preview renders immediately.
Click Generate PDF to download a PDF sized exactly to your label.
Open the PDF, set Print → Scale: 100% / Actual size, select your Rollo printer and its label size, and print.

Custom sizes on Rollo roll or fan-fold stock

For any size that isn't a built-in preset, go to Templates → New template in LabelCraft and enter the exact width and height in millimeters. The PDF page is exactly the size you set; the Rollo gap sensor finds each label's start, so there is no need to leave the printer guessing.

The calibration offset fields (X/Y shift in mm) correct any systematic drift between the template and where the print lands on your stock. Print a calibration test page, measure the offset once, and every future job shifts automatically — useful if your Rollo seats the roll a millimetre or two off-centre.

Troubleshooting

Barcode doesn't scan

Almost always a scale issue — print at 100%, never “fit to page.” If the barcode is missing from the product record, use LabelCraft's “Generate missing barcodes” to create a valid EAN-13 or Code 128 before printing. On small Rollo labels, watch the scan-readiness warning: a barcode squeezed below the scannable width is flagged before the roll runs.

Labels print at the wrong size or two per label

The selected paper size must match your Rollo stock, and the scale must be 100%. If the printer prints across the gap or shifts every other label, run Rollo's label calibration (a long-press on the feed button) so the gap sensor re-learns your stock, then reprint.

Text is cut off at the edge

LabelCraft shows an overflow warning before the PDF downloads. Set the affected element's overflow mode to shrink to auto-scale the font, or truncate to shorten it with an ellipsis — nothing is ever silently cut.

The printer skips or feeds blank labels

This is a Rollo sensor/calibration issue, not a PDF one. Re-run Rollo's calibration so it learns the gap between labels, confirm the roll is seated straight, and check that your template height matches the physical label — a mismatch makes the sensor stop in the wrong place.
