Avery sheet labels are the go-to choice for small retailers who already have a laser or inkjet printer and don't want to buy dedicated hardware. This guide covers how to print Avery barcode labels for your Shopify products with LabelCraft — including the one feature no other Shopify label app has: the ability to reuse a half-used sheet.

Common Avery label sizes for retail barcodes

LabelCraft ships built-in presets for the two most popular Avery formats and supports any other size via custom templates.

Avery 5160 — 2⅝ × 1 in (66.7 × 25.4 mm), 30 labels/sheet — the most common retail and price-tag label. Three columns, ten rows. Built-in preset in LabelCraft.
Avery 5163 — 4 × 2 in (101.6 × 50.8 mm), 10 labels/sheet — larger labels for products with more information to display (title, barcode, SKU, price). Two columns, five rows. Built-in preset in LabelCraft.
Avery 5161 — 4 × 1 in (101.6 × 25.4 mm), 20 labels/sheet — same height as the 5160 but wider. Suits long product names where the extra width lets the title breathe. Create a custom template with 101.6 × 25.4 mm dimensions.
Avery 5162 — 4 × 1⅓ in (101.6 × 33.87 mm), 14 labels/sheet — slightly taller than the 5161; fits a barcode row plus one line of text without cramping. Custom template: 101.6 × 33.87 mm, 2 columns × 7 rows.
Avery 5164 — 4 × 3⅓ in (101.6 × 84.67 mm), 6 labels/sheet — large shipping/warehouse label. Best for oversized products where the barcode needs to be scannable from a distance. Custom template: 101.6 × 84.67 mm, 2 columns × 3 rows.
Avery 5167 — 1¾ × ½ in (44.45 × 12.7 mm), 80 labels/sheet — very small; primarily used for return-address stickers. Fits a Code 128 barcode at 300 dpi but leaves almost no room for text. Only recommended for SKU-only labels.

The start-position feature: reuse half-used sheets

The most common frustration with Avery sheet printing in Shopify is wasted label stock. You print 7 labels from a 30-label sheet and the rest go in the bin — because the official Retail Barcode Labels app always starts at position 1.

LabelCraft solves this with the Start position field in Print step 3. Set it to 8 and your labels begin at position 8 on the sheet (counted left-to-right, then top-to-bottom). The first 7 cells are left blank so they line up with the already-used positions on your sheet. No wasted stock.

The live preview in step 3 updates immediately when you change the start position, so you can see exactly which cells will be filled before downloading the PDF.

The 100%-scale rule

Avery sheet labels depend on exact positioning across the whole page. The top margin, gutter, and label size must all land precisely or your labels will drift off the pre-cut cells.

When your browser's print dialog opens, set the scale to 100% (sometimes labelled “Actual size” or “None”). Do not use “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit”, or “Auto” — these scale the entire page and shift every label off its pre-cut position.

Also disable any “Borderless” or “Full bleed” mode in the printer driver — these rescale the page to remove margins and will misalign sheet labels.

Step-by-step: printing Avery labels from Shopify with LabelCraft

Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin sidebar (Apps → LabelCraft).
In Step 1 — Select Products, search for the products you want to label and add them to the print list.
In Step 2 — Set Quantities, enter how many labels per variant. Use “From inventory” to match current stock counts, or type custom quantities.
In Step 3 — Print, pick your Avery template from the dropdown (e.g. Avery 5160 (2⅝ × 1 in, 30/sheet)). The live preview shows page 1 of your actual job.
If you have a partially-used sheet, set the Start position to the number of already-used cells. The preview updates to show the gap.
Click Generate PDF. Your browser downloads a PDF sized to US Letter (215.9 × 279.4 mm), with labels placed at exactly the positions Avery specifies.
Open the PDF, choose Print → 100% / Actual size, select your printer, and print. Feed your label sheet as directed by your printer (face-up or face-down varies by model).

Custom Avery templates

For Avery sizes not in the built-in preset list, go to Templates → New template. Set the kind to Sheet, enter the label width and height from the Avery data sheet, and fill in the grid: page size (215.9 × 279.4 mm for US Letter), top and left margins, column and row gutters, and the number of columns and rows. The values are printed on every Avery label box or available on avery.com/templates.

Once saved, the template appears alongside the built-in presets in the print flow. You can download a test PDF from the template editor to check alignment before printing on real stock.

Calibration for sheet labels

Even at 100% scale, some printers introduce a small systematic offset — the print head starts slightly to the left or the paper feed pulls slightly short. For sheet labels this matters more than for rolls because the cells are fixed in position.

LabelCraft's printer calibration fields (X/Y offset, ±5 mm in 0.1 mm steps) let you correct this once and forget it. Use the Download calibration test page button in the template editor: it prints a mire with millimetre rulers along every label cell. Read the drift directly off the paper, type it into the offset fields, and all future jobs for that template shift automatically.

Troubleshooting

Labels are offset by a consistent amount on every sheet

This is a printer drift issue, not a software issue. Use the calibration test page to measure the drift and enter the X/Y offset in the template editor. A 1 mm drift right means set X offset to −1 mm.

Labels drift more toward the bottom of the sheet

This indicates page scaling — the top of the page is correct but the cumulative stretch moves later rows. Make sure the print dialog is set to 100% / Actual size and “Borderless” is off.

Barcode doesn't scan

Almost always a scaling issue — shrunk barcodes drop below the scanner threshold. Print at 100%. If the barcode is missing from a product entirely, use LabelCraft's “Generate missing barcodes” tool.

Text is cut off or missing

LabelCraft shows an overflow warning before you download the PDF. If you see it, a long product title won't fit in its element at the current font size. In the template editor, set the title element's overflow mode to shrink (auto-reduce font size) or truncate (shortens it with an ellipsis).

First row of labels is blank / start position is off by one

LabelCraft numbers positions from 1 (the first label cell). If you used the first row (3 labels on an Avery 5160), set Start position to 4, not 3. The preview shows you exactly which cells will print before you download.
