How to Print Brother Labels from Shopify
LabelCraft - barcode labels for Shopify that print at exactly the size you set.
Every label prints at the size you set - measured, not approximate.
Overflow or a missing barcode always raises a visible warning before you print.
Modules snap to your printer's dots, so codes stay crisp and scan first time.
We never overwrite or reassign a product's existing barcode.
Brother QL and TD label printers are common in small retail, offices, and warehouses. This guide covers how to print barcode labels for your Shopify products on a Brother — the right size, right scale, so barcodes scan and labels align.
Supported Brother models
Brother printers that install a standard printer driver work with LabelCraft. Common models:
- QL-810W / QL-820NWBc — Wi-Fi-enabled desktop QL series, up to 62 mm wide. Popular for retail and small offices.
- QL-1100 / QL-1110NWB — Wide-format QL, up to 103.6 mm wide. Can print two narrow labels side by side.
- TD-4420DN / TD-4520DN / TD-4550DNWB — Industrial TD series (104 mm wide). Direct thermal, LAN/Wi-Fi-connected.
- QL-570 / QL-700 / QL-800 — Older QL desktop models still widely in use; full driver support on Windows and macOS.
The QL series uses proprietary DK rolls with fixed widths. The TD series accepts standard direct-thermal rolls and is more flexible for custom stock widths.
P-touch tape printers (PT-P900W, PT-P950NW) are technically supported but use laminated tape rather than direct thermal — not suited for retail barcode labels. Use the QL or TD series instead.
Common Brother label sizes (in millimeters)
QL printers use DK rolls with fixed widths. Key part numbers and their exact dimensions:
- DK-11204 — 17 × 54 mm. Brother's smallest standard label. Barcodes will be narrow; best with Code 128.
- DK-11209 — 29 × 62 mm. Small product or address label. Room for barcode + product name + price at modest font sizes.
- DK-11201 — 29 × 90 mm. Standard address label, longer. Also used for large-item retail labels.
- DK-11212 — 62 × 62 mm. Square. Good for products where the barcode and name deserve equal prominence.
- DK-11202 — 62 × 100 mm. Larger product or shipping label. Room for barcode, title, price, SKU, and a short description.
- DK-22225 — 54 mm wide, continuous roll (cut to any length). Create a custom template in LabelCraft and enter the exact height you need.
- DK-22246 / DK-22212 — 103.6 mm or 62 mm wide, continuous. For wide-format QL-1100 / QL-1110 only.
For TD-series printers with standard thermal rolls, enter your roll width and desired label length directly in millimeters in a custom LabelCraft template.
The critical print setting: 100% scale
The most common cause of wrong-size labels and non-scanning barcodes is the print dialog scaling the PDF. When printing from your browser, set scale to 100% — look for “Actual size” or “None” in the scale dropdown. Never use “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit”, or “Auto”.
LabelCraft embeds the exact physical dimensions of your label stock in every PDF (±0.1 mm). Print at 100% and the label aligns perfectly; scaled, barcode modules shrink below scanner threshold and text drifts off the label edge.
Step-by-step: printing Brother labels from Shopify with LabelCraft
- Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin (Apps → LabelCraft).
- In Step 1 — Select Products, search for the products you want to label and add them.
- In Step 2 — Set Quantities, enter quantities per variant, or use “From inventory” for live stock counts.
- In Step 3 — Print, select your Brother template from the dropdown (e.g. Brother DK-11201 (29 × 90 mm)). A live preview renders immediately.
- Click Generate PDF to download a PDF sized exactly to your DK roll.
- Open the PDF, set Print → Scale: 100% / Actual size, select your Brother printer, and print.
Custom sizes with continuous DK rolls
If you use a continuous DK roll (DK-22225, DK-22246, or a TD-series roll), go to Templates → New template in LabelCraft and enter the exact width and your desired cut length in millimeters. The PDF page is exactly the size you set; the Brother driver or manual cutting determines where each label ends.
The calibration offset fields (X/Y shift in mm) let you correct any systematic drift between the template and where ink lands on your stock. Print a calibration test page, measure the offset once, and all future jobs shift automatically.
Troubleshooting
Barcode doesn't scan
Scale issue — always print at 100%. If the barcode is missing from the product record, use LabelCraft's “Generate missing barcodes” to create a valid EAN-13 or Code 128 barcode before printing.
Labels print narrower than expected
The template width must match your DK roll exactly. DK-11201 is 29 mm wide, not 30 mm — use the correct preset or create a custom template with the exact measurement from your label box.
Text is cut off at the edge
LabelCraft shows an overflow warning before the PDF downloads. Set the affected element's overflow mode to shrink to auto-scale the font, or truncate to shorten it with an ellipsis.
Continuous roll has a gap between labels
Each PDF page is one label. The printer driver uses the page height as the cut point. If there is extra whitespace, check that the template height matches your intended label length exactly — even a 1 mm discrepancy creates a visible gap on continuous stock.
