Adding a barcode to every variant one product at a time does not scale past a handful of items. This guide covers the two reliable ways to do it in bulk: entering the barcodes you already have across hundreds of variants at once, and generating valid new barcodes for the variants that have none — each without typing a single number by hand, and each with a way to confirm the result before you print.

First: do your products already have barcodes, or do you need new ones?

The right method depends on where your barcode numbers come from. There are two cases, and a real catalog often has both:

You already have the numbers — your supplier prints a UPC/EAN on the box, or you bought a GS1 prefix and assigned codes in a spreadsheet. You just need to get those numbers into Shopify in bulk. Use Method 1.
You have no barcodes yet — the variants have no barcode at all, and you need valid, unique codes generated. Use Method 2 to create them; never type random digits, because an invalid or duplicated code will not scan as the right product.

Method 1: bulk-enter existing barcodes in Shopify

When the numbers already exist, Shopify itself has two bulk tools. Both write to the variant's Barcode field — the same field LabelCraft reads when it prints.

Option A: the bulk editor (best for up to a few hundred variants)

In your Shopify admin, go to Products and tick the products you want to edit (or select all).
Click Edit products to open the bulk editor.
Click Columns and add the Barcode field so it shows for every variant.
Paste or type each barcode into the Barcode column. Shopify saves as you go — there is no separate import step.

Option B: CSV export and re-import (best for large catalogs)

In Products, use Export to download your products as a CSV.
Open the CSV in a spreadsheet and fill the Variant Barcode column for each row that needs one. Leave the other columns untouched.
Format the barcode column as text before you type, so the spreadsheet does not strip a leading zero or turn a long number into scientific notation.
Save as CSV and use Import in Shopify, choosing Overwrite existing products so the barcodes are applied.

The single biggest risk in either option is a spreadsheet silently changing the number — stripping a leading zero, or rewriting a long code as scientific notation (e.g. 8.41E+11) and losing digits — so the value that reaches Shopify no longer matches the barcode printed on the box. Always format barcode cells as text before you type, and verify them after import (see the verification section below).

Method 2: generate missing barcodes with LabelCraft

For variants that have no barcode at all, LabelCraft generates valid ones in bulk — no spreadsheet, no manual typing, no invalid codes. It generates a real EAN-13 from your own GS1 prefix when you've set one in Settings, or an internal Code 128 otherwise — each with a correct check digit and the right quiet zones.

Open LabelCraft from your Shopify admin and go to Barcode check.
LabelCraft audits every variant against the GS1 rules and lists the ones that are missing a barcode, have a wrong check digit, or share a duplicate code.
Click Generate missing barcodes.
LabelCraft picks the format automatically from your Settings: with a saved GS1 prefix it generates a real EAN-13 from your own GS1 prefix; without one it creates an internal Code 128 — ideal for in-store and warehouse use.
Review the dry-run preview — it shows exactly what will be written to each variant — then confirm. Only then does LabelCraft write the barcodes back to Shopify.

Because every generated code is built to spec and checked for uniqueness, the result is a catalog of barcodes that actually scan — not a list of numbers you have to validate afterwards.

Verify every barcode is valid before you print

Whichever method you used, run one check before committing label stock. LabelCraft's Barcode check page re-audits the whole catalog and flags anything that would not scan as the right product:

A barcode whose check digit does not match its digits (often a spreadsheet's dropped leading zero).
A barcode with the wrong length for its format (a UPC-A that lost a digit, for example).
The same code on two or more variants, which would ring up the wrong item at the till.
A variant still missing a barcode after the import — never silently skipped, always listed.

Then print the labels in bulk

In LabelCraft, Step 1 — Select Products: add the products you just barcoded (or use a saved selection).
In Step 2 — Set Quantities, set how many of each to print, or pull live counts with “From inventory.”
In Step 3 — Print, pick your label template and check the preview, then Generate PDF.
Print at 100% / actual size so the barcodes come out at the size they were validated for and scan first time.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leading zeros stripped by a spreadsheet

A spreadsheet that treats the barcode column as a number drops leading zeros and rewrites long codes in scientific notation, losing digits. Format the column as text first, and re-check with Barcode check after import — if a code loses a digit it no longer matches the printed symbol and can fail its check digit.

Reusing one barcode across several variants

Every sellable variant needs its own unique barcode. Copy-pasting one code down a column makes several variants ring up as the same item. LabelCraft flags duplicates in Barcode check and can generate a unique code for each.

Inventing EAN-13 numbers you do not own

A real EAN-13 / UPC-A must come from a GS1 prefix licensed to you; typing random 13-digit numbers creates codes that may collide with another company's products and are not valid for retail. If you do not own a GS1 prefix, use Code 128 internal codes — perfect for in-store and warehouse use — instead of fabricating GTINs.
